Hyderabad: More than 700 girl students participated in the fourth edition of the DHEERA, a self-defence programme organised by the Women’s Safety Wing of the Malkajgiri Police Commissionerate at two colleges in Chaitanyapuri.

The programme was conducted at TGSWR Women’s Degree College and Women’s Law College with an aim to equip school and college students with practical self-defence and martial arts skills, improving physical fitness and building confidence.

Addressing the students, Malkajgiri Commissioner of Police B. Sumathi said around 270 abuse-related cases were registered in the commissionerate during the past seven months. She urged students to remain alert, report safety concerns promptly and seek police assistance by dialling 112 whenever necessary.

She highlighted the role of specialised units, including Bharosa Centres, SHE Teams, CDEW Family Counselling Centres, Anti-Human Trafficking Unit and Women Police Stations, in protecting and supporting women and children.

As part of the initiative, video demonstrations of self-defence techniques for students to learn and practice regularly, were prepared by the physical education teachers.

Sumathi said one school from each of the commissionerate’s seven subdivisions would be selected for structured training, with participation expected to exceed 5,000 students. The trained students will later assemble at Saroornagar Indoor Stadium, where their performances will be evaluated and the best-performing school will be given recognition.

DCP, LB Nagar Zone, B. Anuradha encouraged students to make use of the training and practice the techniques regularly.
