Domalapenta: Shashi Kumar Reddy, a young engineer, was among the new recruits in the irrigation department. An assistant executive engineer, he was posted in a challenging work environment, the digging of the Srisailam seft bank canal (SLBC) tunnel in Domalpenta from where the canal begins.

This was just three months ago.

On Saturday, he was washed down the tunnel as water surged towards the exit. He got carried by the water for nearly three kilometres before others personnel, who were exiting the tunnel after noticing the accident, dragged him to safety, A. Srinu, deputy executive engineer of the department, told Deccan Chronicle.

Fortunately, other than some nasty scrapes on his knees and one injured finger, he is safe, but pretty shaken up, Srinu said.
