Hyderabad: As many as 270 drunk drivers, who were caught while driving in an intoxicated condition, during New Year celebrations, were sent to jail after producing them in the court concerned in Hyderabad.

In connection with the New Year-2026 celebrations, the Hyderabad traffic police conducted special enforcement drives against drunk and drive offences across the city from December 24, 2025 to 31, with the aim of ensuring road safety and preventing accidents.

Due to strict enforcement and court proceedings, so far the courts concerned, convicted 270 persons for driving under the influence of alcohol during this period. The convicted offenders were awarded imprisonment and sent to jail.

“Further, letters are being sent to the departments concerned and educational institutes where these respondents are employed or studying, requesting them to take necessary action,” Hyderabad Traffic Joint Commissioner of Police, D Joel Davis said in a statement here on Thursday.

According to him, the Hyderabad traffic police would once again remind the public that drunk driving is a serious offence and poses a major risk to public safety. Such violations will be dealt with strictly, and offenders will face severe legal consequences without any leniency. These special enforcement drives will continue in the interest of saving lives and maintaining road discipline.

The police appealed to all commuters to cooperate and strictly follow traffic rules for their own safety and the safety of others.
