₹14.20 Crore Sanctioned for Manjeera Barrage Repairs

Hyderabad:The Telangana government has sanctioned ₹14.20 crore for repairs to the damaged flexible apron at the downstream energy dissipater of the Manjeera Barrage, following recommendations from the State Dam Safety Organisation (SDSO).
The decision was taken after a Panel of Experts (PoE) inspected the barrage and found deficiencies in the apron. The panel recommended immediate repairs to prevent further deterioration.
Constructed in 1965 with a storage capacity of 1.5 TMC, the barrage was designed to augment drinking water supply to Hyderabad under MWSS Phase‑I and II.
According to the Hyderabad Metropolitan Water Supply and Sewerage Board (HMWS&SB), the barrage has been in service for over 60 years and has faced several high‑intensity floods. Recorded discharges include 162 tmc ft in 1970, 148 tmc ft in 1975, 206 tmc ft in 1988, 138 tmc ft in 1989, 158 tmc ft in 1990, 187 tmc ft in 1998, 86 tmc ft in 2010 and 235 tmc ft in 2025.
The water board informed the government that the apron had deteriorated considerably due to recurring floods. Several concrete blocks have been displaced or washed away, while portions of the adjoining Coursed Rubble Stone (CRS) masonry have suffered partial damage.
The deterioration has affected the functioning of the apron and could result in further damage to the barrage if repairs are not taken up, the SDSO observed.
The water board sought administrative sanction of ₹14.20 crore for the works under the EAM Cell‑I, Transmission Division‑II, Patancheru. The government, after examining the proposal, accorded sanction under the budget head Loans to HMWSSB for Developmental Works.
