12th-Century Rare Sculpture of Bala Ganesh Found in Adilabad District
The sculpture is at present located under a tree, which is close to the railway track on the outskirts of Chanda-Sivaram village near Adilabad city.
Hyderabad:A rare 12th-century sculpture of Lord Bala Ganesh (baby Ganesha) has been found in Adilabad district. It depicts Goddess Parvati in Sukhasana posture on a pedestal holding a fruit, with Bala Ganesh seated on her lap.
The sculpture was noticed by Prudhviraj Roddawar, a local history lecturer, Sriramoju Haragopal, president of Kotha Telangana Charitra Brundam and Dr. E. Sivanagireddy, CEO of Pleach India Foundation, on Saturday.
According to them, the sculpture depicts a breastfeeding posture, a rare feature observed in both Telugu states. They added that Bala Ganesh, in his tender age, is shown with only two hands and without a kireeta on his natural elephantine head. The iconography and style are identical to the sculptures of the Lakshmi Narayana temple at Jainath built by Jagaddeva, a Paramara Prince from Malwa around 1104 CE.
The sculpture is at present located under a tree, which is close to the railway track on the outskirts of Chanda-Sivaram village near Adilabad city. Villagers have been urged to shift the sculpture to the gram panchayat to preserve it for posterity.
