Chennai: The Chennai Open International Women’s Tennis Championship returns to iconic SDAT Tennis Stadium in Nungambakkam after a three year break on October 27 with matches for the tournament going on till November 2 when players from the top 100 rank list would be vying for honours.
Announcing the dates at a media conference, Deputy Chief Minister Udhayanidhi Stalin said: ‘We are immensely proud to announce the return of India’s most prestigious tennis event, the Chennai Open International Women’s Tennis Championship 2025.’
It was particularly noteworthy that the main pavilion of the stadium had been recently named after ‘our very own legend,’ Vijay Amirtharaj and the venue had been recently upgraded to host the world’s top players.
Udhayanidhi Stalin said that this year was special as the Tamil Nadu Tennis Association (TNTA) was celebrating its centenary, a milestone in the State’s tennis history. And thanked Chief Minister M K Stalin for his unwavering support by sanctioning Rs12.00 crore for conducting this tournament.
‘Tamil Nadu has emerged as India’s popular sports destination, marked by consecutive high-profile sports events. Our Dravidian Model Government is always committed to promoting international sporting events and supporting Indian talents,’ he said.
Thanking the global partners of the women’s tennis meet, Octagon and the WTA, for their enduring confidence in Chennai and India, he assured that every detail was being precisely planned to deliver an unforgettable experience for players, fans, sponsors, and the entire tennis fraternity.
‘This 2025 edition promises to be bigger and better, featuring top-100 ranked international players in Chennai. The tournament will engage fans, uplift our local talent, and serve as a catalyst for young women athletes across Tamil Nadu and India,’ he said.
With the government also sanctioning Rs one crore for the ATP Challenger Tour event in Chennai, 2025 was shaping up to be an extraordinary year for sports in Tamil Nadu, he said.
‘We have already announced the Hockey Junior World Cup and the Asian Surfing Championships of 2025. Now, we are thrilled to welcome the grand return of the Chennai Open WTA,’ he said.
Among those present at the media conference were world tennis legend and president of Tamil Nadu Tennis Association, Vijay Amirtharaj, Additional Chief Secretary for Youth Welfare and Sport Development Atulya Misra, member secretary of Sports Development Authority of Tamil Nadu, J Meghanatha Reddy IAS, Member‑Secretary, Sports Development Authority of Tamil Nadu, tournament director Hiten Joshi and Otagon managing director Alastair Garland.
