CHENNAI: A day after assuming office as Chief Minister, C. Joseph Vijay on Monday was accorded Z+ category security cover, one of the highest levels of VIP protection in the country.

Under the upgraded security arrangement, a contingent of 55 Central armed security personnel will provide round-the-clock protection to the Chief Minister. The security detail also includes elite commandos from the National Security Guard (NSG), all equipped with sophisticated MP5 submachine guns.

Officials said the security setup includes a bulletproof vehicle and a pilot escort vehicle to ensure Vijay’s safety during official movement across the state. Prior to becoming Chief Minister, Vijay was provided with Y-category security cover.

The Z+ category security is generally extended to top political leaders and prominent public figures facing potential security threats. The cover typically involves highly-trained commandos, advanced weapon systems, close-protection teams and specialised transport arrangements.

The security detail came as Vijay attended the first session of the 17th Tamil Nadu Legislative Assembly on Monday after taking oath as Chief Minister.

The session, presided over by pro-tem Speaker Karuppiah, witnessed newly-elected MLAs taking oath as members of the Assembly.

Vijay took oath as MLA representing the Perambur Assembly constituency in Chennai. Ministers belonging to Tamilaga Vetri Kazhagam (TVK) also took oath during the proceedings, followed by Opposition Udhayanidhi Stalin and several former ministers.
