CHENNAI: The University of Western Australia (UWA) has received final approval from the University Grants Commission (UGC) to establish its international branch campus in Chennai and classes scheduled to commence on October 19.

The 70,000-sq-ft campus at One National Park on Velachery Main Road will begin orientation for its first batch of students on October 5. The Chennai campus follows the opening of UWA’s Mumbai campus in September and is part of the university’s AUD 80-million long-term investment in wholly owned campuses in India.

UWA Chennai will offer undergraduate programmes in business management, computer science, data science and artificial intelligence, besides postgraduate programmes in information technology and business administration.

The campus is expected to strengthen UWA’s engagement with Tamil Nadu, particularly in areas such as technology, engineering, manufacturing and innovation, while providing students access to the university’s international academic and industry networks.

UWA Vice-Chancellor Professor Amit Chakma said the final UGC approval would allow the university to move from planning to welcoming its first students in Chennai. The campus, he said, would bring UWA’s education to a region with strong capabilities in technology and innovation.
