Chennai: Leader of Opposition in the Tamil Nadu Assembly, Udhayanidhi Stalin on Monday strongly condemned the state government for allegedly placing multi-purpose health workers under house arrest to prevent their planned protest in Chennai, demanding job regularisation. In a social media post, he accused the government of "abandoning" pre-election promises made to medical staff.

He questioned the "atrocity" of preemptively detaining workers at their homes before they could participate in what he described as an unprecedented protest.

Udhayanidhi drew parallels between these actions and the detention of youth protesting election irregularities in Delhi.

He wondered whether unleashing oppression without inviting democratically protesting groups -- such as farmers, students, and nurses -- for negotiations is what the government meant by "change".

Describing the multi-purpose health workers as the "backbone of medical services," he demanded their immediate release.

Udhayanidhi further urged the "Dummy Chief Minister" to initiate dialogue with the workers and take necessary steps to fulfill their justifiable demands.
