TV Journo Among 5 Attacked for Filming Illegal Quarry in Karur

Karur:Five persons, two of them private television channel journalists, were injured when they attempted to videograph illegal activities of a stone quarry allegedly owned by DMK MLA of Srirangam, Palaniyandi, at Sivayam village, near Krishnarayapuram, in Karur district, on Friday.

Police said TV journalist Kathiravan, videographer Sebastian, social activist Sudalai Kannu, advocate Thirumalai Rajan and his assistant Rajamanickam, went to the quarry, 8 km from the Kulithalai-Manapparai highway, by car. From there, they videographed the quarry activities with a drone for about two hours.

In the meantime, the employees noticed the drone in the quarry area. About 50 persons, most of them staff of the quarry, came to spot and severely attacked the journalists and others. They totally damaged two video cameras, a drone and a few mobile phones and also kidnapped them.

For more than two hours, their colleagues were unable to contact the affected persons and referred the matter to the Karur superintendent of police, Jose Thangaiah.

On his direction, a police team, led by Kulithalai DSP Senthilkumar, secured Kathiravan and videographer Sebastian and brought them to the Kulithalai police station for interrogation.

Advocate Thirumalai Rajan and his assistant Rajamanickam, severely injured in the attack, have been admitted to the government hospital at Kulithalai.

Police investigations are continuing.
