Chennai: Restoration work of 10,185 supply channels and 809 water bodies — including lakes, ponds and ooranis — under the control of the rural development and panchayat raj department in Tamil Nadu, began Monday.
At an estimated cost of ₹500 crore, the works commenced under the ‘Viksit Bharat – gram employment guarantee and livelihood scheme' (VB-G RAM G).
As part of the initiative, minister for rural development and water resources, N. Anand, inaugurated renovation works worth ₹3.19 crore on the supply channel of the Puthur village tank in Nedungundram panchayat, Kattankulathur panchayat union, Chengalpet district.
The restoration works will play a crucial role in effectively harvesting rainwater, increasing the capacity of water bodies, raising groundwater levels and conserving water resources for agricultural and drinking water needs.
