Tamil Nadu: Urban Unemployment Rate Up To 6.6 Pc In June
The overall Unemployment Rate remained unchanged in June 2026 at 5.5 per cent compared to May 2026: Reports
CHENNAI: Unemployment rate in urban areas stood at 6.6 per cent in June 2026 from 6.4 per cent in May and that among women was up to 8.4 per cent. While rural unemployment rate has marginally eased to 5 per cent in June from 5.1 per cent in May, it is way higher than 3.9 per cent in December 2025, as per the PLFS data.
The overall Unemployment Rate remained unchanged in June 2026 at 5.5 per cent compared to May 2026. However, the overall unemployment rate was at 4.7 per cent in November 2025.
On a year-on-year basis, the urban UR declined from 7.1% in June 2025 to 6.6% in June 2026, a reduction of 0.5 percentage points. However, it was at 6.5 per cent in November 2025.
The rural unemployment rate eased marginally from 5.1% in May to 5.0% in June. Rural unemployment rate was at 4.9 per cent in June 2025, dropped to 3.9 per cent in November 2025 and has been moving up since then.
The unemployment rate among women moved up both in rural and urban areas. The overall rate moved up from 5.6 per cent in May to 5.9 per cent in June, while urban rate was up from 8.2 per cent in May to 8.4 per cent in June. The rural female unemployment rate was up from 4.7 per cent to 5 per cent.
Though the overall Labour Force Participation Rate (LFPR) for persons aged 15 years and above stood at 54.4% in June 2026, same as in May 2026, urban LFPR rose to 50.1% in June 2026 from 49.8% in May 2026. Against 25.2 per cent in June 2025, the LFPR among urban women moderated slightly to 24.8 per cent in June 2026.
