Tamil Nadu minister Thennarasu meets Bhupender Yadav in Delhi

Chennai: State Minister for Finance, Environment and Climate Change, Thangam Thennarasu urged Bhupender Yadav, Union Minister for Environment, Forest and Climate Change to expedite the clearances and release the funds for a plethora of projects proposed by Tamil Nadu.

Thennarasu, who called on the Union Minister at New Delhi, submitted a memorandum, and also held discussions on the various issues along with Additional Chief Secretary for Environment, Climate Change and Forests, Supriya Sahu, an official press release said.

Chief Minister M K Stalin had made a request to the Union Minister, MoEF&CC to exempt Environmental Clearance for industrial sheds with area up to 1,50,000 sq.m., with a view to expedite Industrial development in the state, the press release said.

‘A Notification in this regard was brought out by the Ministry accepting the request of the Tamil Nadu Government. While thanking the Hon’ble Union Minister for the same, the finance minister requested to expedite the clearance to the proposal of the TN government for reconstitution of the State Environment Impact Assessment Authority (SEIAA) and the State Expert Appraisal Committee (SEAC) as their current tenure is getting over in April 2025,’ it said.

Tamil Nadu had also submitted a proposal to the Ministry to set up an additional SEAC to provide speedy clearances to growing number of infrastructure and development projects in the state and the Union Minister assured to provide speedy clearance to the proposal of the State government, it said.

‘During the discussion, MoEF&CC was requested to sanction a project for creating a green shield for enhancing coastal and forest ecosystems in Thoothukudi district already submitted to the Ministry under the National Action Plan on Climate Change and Green India Mission at a cost of Rs 27.53 crore. The project aims to halt sea erosion in several coastal areas in the district through nature-based solutions,’ it said.

Thennarasu made a request for giving sanction expeditiously for the comprehensive Rs 74.4 crore project submitted to the Compensatory Afforestation Fund Management and Planning Authority (CAMPA), functioning under MoEF&CC, for relocating Thengumarahada village from the buffer area of Mudumalai Tiger Reserve in the Nilgiris District.

The Union Minister assured his Ministry’s support to the State Government’s initiatives highlighted in the memorandum, the release said.
