CHENNAI: The Chief Minister’s Breakfast Scheme would be expanded on September 17 to serve free food in the morning for students Classes 6, 7 and 8, too, it was decided at a review meeting of the Social Welfare and Women Empowerment Department, presided over by Chief Minister C Joseph Vijay on Monday.

Launched in 2022, the scheme envisaged serving free breakfast to children from Class one to five in government and government-aided schools with a view to liberating working women from the responsibility of providing meals for their primary school-going children early in the morning.

Improving on the scheme, Vijay expanded it up to Class 8 and told the officials of Social Welfare and Women Empowerment Department to ensure that the first phase of the new scheme was launched on September 15, the birth anniversary of Periyar E V Ramasamy.

Reviewing the functioning of the department and the working of the various schemes undertaken by them, the Chief Minister said the beneficiaries – women, children, transgendered persons and senior citizens – should avail of the benefits on time.

He also wanted an awareness to be created on drug abuse among the children and rescue those who had fallen prey to narcotics and rehabilitate them and the meeting also discussed the fund allocation for the schemes listed under the long-vision ‘Vetri Tamilagam’ (Triumphant Tamil Nadu) report.
