Tamil Nadu: Dy CM calls on Stalin to show FICCI turf award

Chennai: Deputy Chief Minister Udhayanidhi Stalin called on Chief Minister M K Stalin at the Secretariat on Wednesday to show him the ‘Best State Promoting Sports’ award given to Tamil Nadu at the FICCI Turf 2024 14th International Sports meet at New Delhi.

The honour was bestowed on the State for promoting sports through a variety of measures like Rs 104.22 crore worth incentives to 3345 sportspersons who had won medals that were initiated by the DMK government after it came to power and distribution of Rs 85.99 crore worth sports equipment under the Kalaignar Sports Accessories Distribution Scheme to 12,525 village panchayats.

The State, under the DMK rule, had also seen the development of a wide range of sports infrastructure like a boxing ring at Gopalapuram in Chennai and a Rs 825 crore artificial turf at Madurai, a Rs 50 lakh worth weight-lifting training centre, minor stadia at 7 Assembly constituencies and so on.

Several international and national sporting events were also held in the State after the DMK came to power like the 44th Chess Olympiad, World Tennis Association (WTA) championship, Squash World Cup, Chennai Grandmasters event and Khelo India Youth sports meet.

The award was received in New Delhi by officials in charge of sports in the State, Atulya Mishra and J Megnath Reddy and it was taken to the Chief Minister by Udhayanidhi Stalin.
