CHENNAI: Vowing to protect the historic significance and cultural identities of Chennai, Chief Minister C Joseph Vijay wished a Happy 'Madras Day' to all as the capital city celebrated its 387th founding day by organising several events like a photo exhibition at the Anna Centenary Library, inaugurated by State ministers for education, A Rajmohan, and Tourism, S Rajeshkumar.

The week-long exhibition, put up by the state Tourism Department, displayed a curated collection of heritage photographs, documenting the architectural landmarks like Fort St George, the Ripon Building and the Madras High Court.

Speaking at the inauguration, Rajeshkumar said the visual archives played a vital role in educating the younger generations on Chennai's history and its architectural and cultural heritage.

Rajmohan underlined the power of photography to chronicle history and evoke deep human emotions, citing globally iconic photographs of historical importance.

Madras Day has been celebrated every year since 2004 to commemorate the founding of the modern city of Chennai in 1639 with representatives of the East India Company purchasing a strip of land for building Fort St George that would continue to be the seat of power even now.

What started as a one-day commemoration in 2004 subsequently became a weekly celebration called Madras Week with many private and public sector organisations besides heritage enthusiasts taking part in it through exhibitions, talks, heritage walks and other remembrances.
