Chennai: Law and Electricity minister C.T.R. Nirmal Kumar on Sunday said the DMK lost the 2026 Assembly elections due to ‘family politics’ and expressed the opinion that that only if M.K. Stalin and his son Udhayanidhi quit the party would it bring back respectability to DMK founded by Dravidian icon C.N. Annadurai.

Addressing a function at Madurai, Nirmal Kumar said, “The DMK leaders have not understood why the people boycotted the DMK and drove it away. They have not understood the reasons for the defeat and think that people will vote for them if they bring youth to top posts and retiring district secretaries above 70”.

He said people boycotted the DMK due to family politics and retiring people above 70 years of age would not make any change. The DMK leaders have an attitude of dynasty rule, and the State had not been given to them to rule from one generation to the next. To get back people’s respect, Stalin and Udhayanidhi Stalin should quit the DMK, he asserted.

The DMK leaders should bring democracy into the party and a few people like the friends of Stalin’s son and son-in-law were in power in the party. The party was formed by Anna and it had gone into the hands of a family, Nirmal Kumar said, adding the party should be freed from family rule.

Later addressing a press meet, Nirmal Kumar denied allegations of taking revenge against the DMK leaders like former minister K.N. Nehru through Directorate of Vigilance and Anti-Corruption (DVAC). He said anyone who are involved in corrupt activities could not escape.

The Enforcement Directorate had already issued notice to him on irregularities of receiving money for jobs and the DVAC would issue summons to the accused and conduct investigations. When there is documentary evidence, no one could escape, the minister said, adding a case could not be proved in court without proper evidence.
