Second ATM Robbery in Chennai Suburbs Within 3 Days, Rs 12 Lakh Stolen

Chennai: In the second ATM robbery within three days in Chennai suburbs, an unidentified gang broke open a private bank ATM machine and took away Rs. 12 lakh.
On Monday morning, a gang had stolen Rs. 9 lakh from an ICICI ATM at Somangalam and the modus operandi was the same. On Thursday, a gang stole Rs. 12 lakh from another private bank ATM in Gummidipoondi in Thiruvallur district.
The ATM centres of Axis Bank and Indian Overseas Bank are located in adjacent buildings on the bypass road in Gummidipoondi. When a customer visited the Axis Bank ATM to withdraw cash, he found the machine damaged and alerted the police.
Police said the robbers had used a welding machine to break open the ATM and take away the cash. They had also sprayed a chemical on the CCTV cameras before stealing the money. In Somangalam also, the robbers had done the same thing.
According to the bank management, Rs. 12 lakh was loaded into the ATM on Tuesday. The gang also tried to break open the nearby Indian Overseas Bank ATM, but failed.
The SIPCOT police have formed a special team and started a search to trace the gang.
