Ramanathapuram Villagers Block Road Against PWD Land Encroachment
Locals accused that PWD Department had violated the irrigation rules by constructing farm ponds, which is threatening the Kanmai water catchment area and future water supply.
Rameswaram: Alleging that a private company has encroached the land of the public works department at Ithampadal in Kadaladi taluk of Ramanathapuram district, the villagers on Thursday staged a roadblock protest at Ithampadal junction on the Rameswaram-Kanyakumari East Coast Road.
They said the PWD Department had violated the irrigation rules by constructing farm ponds about 30 feet deep, which is threatening the Kanmai water catchment area and future water supply. Despite several petitions to the district administration, no action has been taken so far. Hence 300 people, including 100 women, staged a road blockade.
If any agreement has been signed with a private company in Itambadal Kanmayil water catchment area, it should be fully investigated and cancelled, and appropriate action should be taken against the officials and all others involved, they demanded.
