CHENNAI: Six days after they were sworn in at the Jawaharlal Indoor Stadium, the 10 Ministers of the Tamilaga Vetri Kazhagam were allotted portfolios by the Governor Rajendra Vishwanath Arlekar on Saturday based on the recommendation of Chief Minister C Joseph Vijay, who kept home, general administration, police and women’s welfare, among others, to himself.
A press release from Lok Bhavan said that the other departments that would be held by the Chief Minister were Indian Administrative Service, Indian Police Service, Indian Forest Service, District Revenue Officers, Special Programme Implementation, Youth Welfare, Welfare of Children, Aged, Differently Abled Persons, Municipal Administration, Urban and Water Supply.
N Anand, who has been designated as Minister for Rural Development and Water Resources, would take care of Rural Development, Panchayats and Panchayat Union, Poverty alleviation programme, Rural Indebtedness and Irrigation, Irrigation Projects including Small Irrigation, the release said.
Minister for Public Works and Sports Development, Aadhav Arjuna, will be in charge of Public Works (Buildings, Highways and Minor Ports) and Sports Development, while K G Arunraj will look after Health, Medical Education and Family Welfare.
Veteran politician K A Sengottaiyan will be the Minister for Finance and P Venkataramanan will be in charge of Food and Civil Supplies, Consumer Protection and Price Control, while R Nirmalkumar will be looking after electricity and non-conventional Energy Development, Law, Courts, Prisons and Prevention of Corruption, Legislative Assembly, Governor, Elections and Passports.
Rajmohan, the Minister for School Education, will look after Tamil Development, Information and Publicity, Archaeology, Tamil Official Language and Tamil Culture, Film Technology and Cinematograph Act, Newsprint Control, Stationery and Printing and Government Press.
The Minister for Natural Resources T K Prabhu will be in charge of Minerals and Mines and S Keerthana will be Minister for Industries, taking care of Investment Promotion.
It is learnt that Vijay wants to wrap up the entire Cabinet formation by the end of the month after inducting Ministers from other friendly parties that have extended support to the Government. Other than the CPI and CPM, who have declared that they will extend support from outside, all the parties like the AIADMK, Congress, IUML and VCK are likely to be given ministerial berths.
As an ally of the Congress, Vijay was expected to travel to Thiruvananthapuram to take part in the swearing in of V D Satheesan as Kerala Chief Minister on Monday and by the end of the month he would be going to New Delhi to call on Prime Minister Narendra Modi.
