Chennai: Electricity and Law Minister C.T.R. Nirmal Kumar on Tuesday denied allegations that the Tamil Nadu Power Distribution Corporation Limited (TNPDCL) has decided to buy power at Rs. 41 per unit.

There were reports that the TNEB had decided to purchase power at a cost of Rs. 41 per unit from December 2026 to May 2027. Citing the reports, the opposition leaders have condemned the Tamilaga Vetri Kazhagam (TVK) government.

Nirmal Kumar denied the reports in a message posted on X and said the TNEB is not going to purchase power for Rs. 37 to Rs. 41. The tenders were opened, and several companies had quoted high prices, but the government would not purchase power at high prices since the TNEB has sufficient power for the next three months.

The government has issued tenders to satisfy the requirements for the 2027 summer and considers the quoted prices as high and unfair. The government would issue long term tenders to meet the power demands for the next 20 years, he said. The government would not purchase power at high prices, he asserted.
