Chennai: Minister C.T.R. Nirmal Kumar on Sunday ridiculed DMK president M.K. Stalin for his statement of ‘victorious defeat’ in the by-polls in the two constituencies and said it only showed the present state of the DMK, which would face a similar situation to that of AIADMK in two years.
MDMK principal secretary Durai Vaiko too countered the DMK’s comments that they made Joseph Vijay sweat it out for victory, saying the Tamilaga Vetri Kazhagam (TVK) could have won 200 seats if the DMK government allowed C. Joseph Vijay to campaign for his party. As far as Tamil Nadu is concerned, the TVK could have performed better if there was no SIR, he said.
Addressing the media at Madurai after taking part in a function providing welfare assistance to the people, the minister said there was a time when Stalin refused to speak about the TVK. Now, taking second place after the TVK had become an achievement for the DMK leader, showing the party’s present condition.
When asked about the DMK allegations that the TVK is not coming against the SIR and arresting those protesting the revision, the minister said the TVK had opposed SIR and held protests. Those who held protests at permitted venues were not disturbed, and people could not protest in places where there is no permission, he explained.
The DMK and AIADMK could not return to power again, and the TVK would be in power, the minister said, adding the local body elections would be held in four or five months and the TVK would earn 100 per cent victory. Dharapuram was a fortress of the AIADMK, and the party had dropped to the third position in such a constituency. From now on, the AIADMK could only take the third or fourth position.
The loyal voters have supported the TVK and its leader C. Joseph Vijay. The shift occurred because the people did not like the decision of Palaniswami to try to form a government with the DMK's support, he said.
Earlier, addressing the function, the TVK had won 8 seats in Madurai, where the DMK and AIADMK enjoyed good support. The DMK, which was running the Madurai Corporation, indulged in corruption to the tune of Rs. 400 to 500 crore but did not complete even an underground drainage scheme. He also challenged the DMK councillors in Madurai to come out with details of their property.
