OOTY: Villagers of Cherumulli, in western Nilgiris, have sought immediate action from the foresters to drive away the crop-raiding wild jumbos in the village limits.

The villagers complained that wild jumbos that strayed into the Macchikolli hamlet in Cherumulli village limits on Tuesday night entered the farm fields in the vicinity of the village and damaged the standing crops, including banana crops, leading to heavy loss for the villagers.

Though the villagers had been requesting the forest department to deploy a team in the area to track the movement of the wild elephants to check their entry into the farm lands, nothing tangible was done all these days, they said.

The wild jumbos straying into the village limits give nightmares to the villagers. The crop-raiding jumbos bring additional burden and economic loss to the villagers. It is high time the foresters in Gudalur forest division chalked out special action plans to thwart the wild elephant menace in the Cherumulli village limits, the villagers urged.
