CHENNAI: Former Union minister of state L. Murugan returned to Chennai from Delhi on Saturday evening after resigning from the Union Council of Ministers and his Rajya Sabha membership.

He said he would work as an ordinary BJP cadre to strengthen the party across Tamil Nadu, ahead of the 2029 Lok Sabha election.

Murugan was given a warm reception by BJP cadre at the airport. However, no prominent party leaders were present to receive him.

Speaking to reporters at the airport, Murugan said he had decided to devote more time to party work after witnessing the enthusiastic public response during Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s recent visit to Tamil Nadu. He said Modi had done a great deal for Tamil Nadu, its people, language and culture since 2014, claiming that nearly Rs. 15 lakh crore had been allocated for the state’s development over the past 12 years. He also referred to the Prime Minister’s efforts to promote Tamil and Tamil cultural icons, including Thiruvalluvar and the Thirukkural, internationally.

Murugan said he wanted to work closely with Tamil Nadu BJP president Nainar Nagenthran to strengthen the party organisation at the grassroots-level and prepare for the 2029 parliamentary election, which he described as crucial.

“I will travel to every nook and corner of Tamil Nadu and work for the party as a BJP cadre,” he said, adding that he had sought and received the Prime Minister’s permission to step down from his positions and concentrate on organisational work.

Murugan said he would continue his political work with the support and affection of party workers. He resigned from his ministerial post and Rajya Sabha membership on

Monday.
