Chennai: Chengalpet Collector M. Veerappan on Wednesday said a three-tier security has been provided to the counting centre for the Madurantakam by-poll. He said the VVPAT slips would be counted using money counting machines.

The Electronic Voting Machines (EVMs), which were taken to the Integrated Social Development Training Centre at Aathur, were sealed in front of the agents of the candidates, election observers, district collector and superintendent of police.

Veerappan told the media at the centre that a scrutiny of polling was carried out in front of the election observers to know if there were any problems. No problem was found and the EVMs were sealed in front of the agents, he said, adding a three-tier security is provided to the counting centre. About 70 CRPF personnel would be on duty in the first layer and the State police with guns in the second layer and the police belonging to Chengalpet would be on duty in the third tier, the Collector said.

He added that 54 CCTVs were fitted throughout the counting centre and the visuals could be watched by the agents round the clock. The counting would begin at 8 am on October 9 and 14 tables would be used to count votes in the EVMs and two tables to count the postal ballots.
