Madhuranthakam Gears Up For October 6 By-poll, Collector Holds All-party Meet

Chennai: Chengalpet district administration geared up for the Madhuranthagam by-poll to be held on October 6, as the model code of conduct came into force from Monday night. Collector M. Veerappan held a meeting of representatives of recognised political parties and police officials to explain the election arrangements and the model code of conduct.
The Collector explained the model of conduct to the representatives of political parties and the rules governing election campaigns. The conditions on public meetings, processions, posters, banners and the procedure for obtaining permission for various modes of campaign were explained. The Collector also explained the expenses for the elections and how they would be monitored by the election officials. He insisted that the political party representatives follow the Election Commission rules and cooperate to hold the elections in a peaceful, honest and transparent manner.
The district officials commenced the action of removing the wall posters and cutouts of political parties in the constituency. Five flying squads were formed to monitor the violations of the model code of conduct. The vehicle checkups to stop the carrying of money and gifts were also started.
Madhuranthagam has 2,11,295 voters with 1,03,943 men and 1,07,288 women. The AIADMK candidate Maragadham Kumaravel won the seat in the 2026 Assembly elections, but she resigned her MLA seat and joined the Tamilaga Vetri Kazhagam (TVK). So, the constituency was declared vacant, and the Election Commission announced by-polls for Madhuranthagam and Dharapuram on October 6. The filing of nominations will begin on Wednesday and will go on till September 16. The counting of votes will be held on October 9.
