Chennai: Governor Rajendra Vishwnath and Chief Minister C Joseph Vijay conveyed their Deepavali greeting to the people of the State, where the celebrations for festival of lights, falling on Sunday, has already begun with many families travelling to their native places to be with their loved ones back home.

Vijay’s Deepavali greetings to the people came as a whiff of fresh air since the Chief Minister was wishing them for the festival after five year. Former Chief Minister M K Stalin, keeping with the tradition of his party, did not greet the people all through his tenure though he would convey his wishes to the people for other festivals like Christmas, Eid, Pongal and so on.

The greetings were received with a warm response from the people, expressing their happiness and appreciation for the gesture. The Deepavali message has become a talking point among supporters, with many thanking the Chief Minister for remembering the people during the festival. A simple festive wish has turned into a memorable moment for many in Tamil Nadu.

Though festival shopping had begun long ago in the State long ago, most of the commercial hubs were crowded as last minute shopping by the poor picked by momentum and continued in the night.

Apart from cloth shops people thronged cracker outlets, despite the restrictions imposed on the bursting of crackers, in large numbers while sweet shops did brisk business as people traditionally gifted sweets to friends and relatives for Deepavali.
