CHENNAI: The Greater Chennai Corporation (GCC) has set a target of 12 lakh saplings across the city to increase its green cover.
GCC Commissioner G.S. Sameeran said the tree-planting drive has been intensified across all 15 zones in line with the Chief Minister's directive to expand the city's green cover. A total of 1,04,650 saplings have already been planted and maintained over the past five months, he said.
The corporation has established nurseries at Mylapore, Madambakkam and Myladies Park to raise saplings. It is also sourcing saplings from the forest department and private nurseries to meet the target.
Plantation activities are being carried out in 993 parks, 417 Chennai schools, vacant lands, burial grounds, playgrounds, ponds and lakes. Coastal stretches, including Palavakkam, Marina and Thiruvanmiyur beaches, are also being covered.

The corporation is encouraging volunteers, resident welfare associations and non-governmental organisations to take up plantation drives in their neighbourhoods and is distributing saplings to support their efforts, the commissioner said.
