TIRUCHY: More than 200 families that had been served eviction notice in ward 65 of Tiruchy Corporation, created a scare for the police when they besieged the vehicle of Chief Minister C. Joseph Vijay and disrupted his convoy when he was on way to Pudukkottai from Tiruchy airport.

The families had been residing for over 100 years in the Sembattu N.M.T. Colony area, near the Tiruchy airport, which falls under the 65th ward of Tiruchy Corporation.

The land was originally allocated opposite a private tannery factory that used to operate in the area, specifically to meet the housing needs of the labourers working there.

A few weeks ago, the local residents received an eviction notice. The notice claimed that some individuals had purchased the entire land where the residents currently live. The public alleged that the notice strictly ordered them to vacate their houses within 10 days.

In a desperate bid to protect their residences, more than 200 members suddenly intercepted and blocked Vijay’s vehicle and his convoy, while he was on way to Pudukkottai from the Tiruchy airport.

The agitators held up placards and flex boards bearing their demands and raised slogans demanding justice.

Vijay received the petition submitted by the people.

Following the siege of the Chief Minister’s vehicle, more than a 100 police personnel on security duty rushed to the spot. They held talks with the protesting public and safely moved them to the side of the road to clear the traffic, official sources said.

Earlier, the Chief Minister arrived by a private chartered flight to Tiruchy from Chennai and after completing his government function engagement at Pudukkottai, left for Chennai by a private chartered aircraft around 4 pm.
