Chennai: Alleging that the opposition parties were fabricating stories to defame the DMK government as they were unable to find any fault with its functioning, Chief Minister M K Stalin said that a systematic smear campaign was being carried out by individuals and groups that even met secretly for the purpose.

To overcome the smear campaign undertaken by the opposition through their media outlets and social media channels, the DMK’s general council meeting, to be held at the city of Madurai on Sunday, June 1, would work out the strategies by arriving at answers to questions like what the DMK should do to counter the onslaught, Stalin said in his latest epistle to party cadre on Friday.

The general council meeting would also reflect on the duties of the party and what were the goals towards which the party had been travelling as the DMK government had to continue for the welfare of the people by defeating the designs of the opposition that was desperate to salvage itself from the ignominy of repeated electoral defeats by wresting power through some means or the other.

Calling upon the general council members to ensure the success of the meeting that would guide the State on its future growth besides determining the political path that the country would take, the Chief Minister told the cadre to arrive at least an hour in advance at the venue in Uthangudi to ensure that the event kicked off at the scheduled time of 9 am.

One of the major issues that the meeting would discuss would be on the preparations for the 2026 Assembly elections, for which the field work needed to be finalized immediately to facilitate the continuation of the people-friendly governance, he said.

Every event of the DMK had traditionally been occasions for not just meeting and dispersing but as a meaningful rendezvous to determine the direction of the party and as a ground to work out the future action plans during the past three fourth of a century, he said.

It was in such a backdrop of even rival parties keenly observing the proceedings and watching over decisions taken at every meeting of the DMK, the Madurai conclave was being convened to provide the party functionaries with opportunities to listen to celebrated speakers and also his own oration setting the roadmap for the future, Stalin said.
