The survey covers canals with a combined length of 81.81 km, including the Kodungaiyur, Veerangal Odai, Mambalam, Otteri Nullah, Virugambakkam, Captain Cotton, Trustpuram, Rettai Kuppam, Pallikaranai and Secretariat Colony canals.
Chennai: The Greater Chennai Corporation (GCC) has launched the drone survey of 44 canals across the city as part of preparing for the northeast monsoon.
Corporation commissioner G.S. Sameeran launched the survey at the starting point of the Kodungaiyur North Canal in Muthamizh Nagar 2nd Block in Tondiarpet zone on Friday.
The exercise is aimed at scientifically assessing the extent of silt, garbage, garden waste, water hyacinth and other obstructions in the canals before desilting and clearing works are taken up.
Drone surveys were being conducted in the Kodungaiyur North Canal, Veerangal Odai and West Mambalam Canal. Around four to five drones will be deployed daily. The canals are being surveyed in phases. Specific stretches will be assigned to each drone. The progress of the survey and data collected will be monitored systematically, the Corporation said.
Images, videos and geographical information collected during the survey will be integrated to create a GIS-based database and maps reflecting the current condition of the canals.
Based on the findings, the Corporation will prioritise pre-monsoon works such as desilting, removal of blockages, repair of damaged stretches and measures to ensure uninterrupted water flow.
Zonal Officer A. Rajkumar and Executive Engineer S. Harinath were present.
