Chennai:Dispelling speculations of the Congress breaking away from the DMK-led alliance and joining hands with the fledgling Tamilaga Vetri Kazhagam (TVK) for the 2026 Assembly elections, the Congress party on Saturday assured its continuation in the coalition and ruled out aligning with the TVK.

AICC in-charge for Tamil Nadu, Girish Chodankar, whose earlier remarks suggesting that the Congress was not in favour of remaining with the DMK stirred a hornet’s nest, told media persons at Satyamurthy Bhavan on Saturday that talks with the DMK were as on for finalizing the seat sharing arrangement.

Denying that demands were made for 38 seats and three ministers, he said that the party only wanted the finalization of the seats in advance to enable them to start the election process, including identification of candidates and launching of the campaign, on time.

Asked about the remarks of Praveen Chakravorty, another AICC honcho, openly running down the DMK government and also calling on TVK president Vijay, he dismissed those episodes as irrelevant and insisted that the Congress was with the DMK.

To a question if the Congress would seek a share in power, he shot back: ‘Who would not aspire to have power?’ but did not elaborate if that would form a condition for the continuation of the alliance with the DMK.
