CM Vijay Orders Revival of Amma Canteens

Chennai: Chief Minister C Joseph Vijay ordered the rejuvenation of the Amma Unavagam (Amma canteens) scheme, under which food was being served to people at subsidized rates for breakfast, lunch and dinner through 383 dining halls in Chennai Corporation area and 237 facilities in other Corporations and Municipalities..
Launched by former Chief Minister J Jayalalithaa in 2013 to provide quality food to urban poor, the canteens were a big draw among the people in the towns and cities, particularly the working class. After the DMK came to power in 2021, the canteens lost their popularity though people patronized them.
Now Vijay, who was told that the quality of food served in the Amma canteens were of low quality and lacked in taste, had instructed the officers of various departments connected with the scheme to improve the infrastructure and procure necessary utensils to ensure that quality food was served to the people without any interruption.
For the refurbishing of the Amma canteens, money from the general funds could be utilized by the Corporations and Municipalities, the Chief Minister ordered.
Vijay presided over a meeting of the energy department in which various departments like the TNEB participated and discussed the progress of the scheme to provide free 200 units of electricity to households consuming less than 500 units a month. The first signature of the chief minister was for the Implementation of free electricity scheme that came into force on May 10.
The progress on several other electricity schemes, including the green corridor that would see the harnessing of solar and wind energy, was also taken up for discussion in the meeting, in which instructions were issued to the department to be prepared to face the needs of the coming summer and rainy seasons.
The Chief Minister also met a slew of industry leaders and discussed with them their plans for development in the State. Among them were the office bearers of Federation of Indian Chambers of Commerce and Industry (FICCI) led by the State Council president G S K Velu.
Chairman of the Ramco group, P R Venkatrama Raja, Renault group head in India, Stephane Deblaise and Madras Chamber of Commerce president Ramkumar Shankar and general secretary G S K Saraswati also discussed the future business plans with the Chief Minister at his chamber in the Secretariat.
