Chennai: A Motor Sports City and a Tamil Nadu Olympic City would soon be set up in the State to promote sports to train world-class sportspersons and develop venues to hold international sports events with a view to encouraging the youth in various sports activities, Chief Minster C Joseph Vijay announced on Wednesday.
Making the announcements under Rule 110 in the State Assembly, Vijay said the motor sports city would bring Formula 1 and Formula 2 races to Tamil Nadu and the Olympic city, to be built along with Sports Development Authority of Tamil Nadu (SDAT) , would be an integrated sports complex.
The sports complex would have world class stadia, other sporting facilities and a high performance training centre, besides facilities to develop sports science and sports medicine. The complex, which would also have hostel facilities for coaches and trainees, would strive to train sportspersons in various fields to compete and win medals in international events, including the Olympics.
Though the State now had two big motor sports venues, the Madras International Circuit at Irungattukottai and the Kari Motor Speedway in Coimbatore with facilities for F-3 and F-4 races, the new Motor Sports City would help put Tamil Nadu on the top of the pack in motor racing, Vijay said.
