Chennai Road Develops Sinkhole, Third Cave-In on Stretch Since 2021

A sudden massive sinkhole that appeared on the Perambur Barracks Road in Chennai city on Tuesday caused a stir among motorists, raising concerns over the condition of an ageing underground sewage pipeline that is likely to have caused the incident.  Chennai Metropolitan Water Supply and Sewerage Board (CMWSSB) officials have barricaded the area near the sewage pumping station in Pulianthope to prevent accidents and have initiated rectification work.

The incident is the third such cave-in on this stretch since 2021, with similar sinkholes reported in October 2021 and November 2022.
