Chennai May Get Another Spell of Rain Today
The developing Cyclone Arnab and the associated low-pressure system over the Arabian Sea are expected to influence wind patterns, with the circulation likely to shift towards the Bay of Bengal, off the north Tamil Nadu coast, by Monday.
Chennai: Chennai and its neighbouring districts could receive another spell of rain until Monday morning as a change in wind patterns associated with a developing cyclonic circulation over the Arabian Sea is expected to bring moisture towards the north Tamil Nadu coast.
Although weather models are not indicating significant rainfall over Chennai, the prevailing wind pattern could favour rainfall in the Chennai-Thiruvallur-Kanchipuram-Chengalpet (KTCC) region, along with Ranipet and Vellore.
According to weather bloggers, easterly winds from the sea may bring moisture to these areas, raising the possibility of rain, particularly during the night and early morning hours. Monday morning could be the last opportunity for Chennai to receive appreciable rainfall before a likely break in the northeast monsoon activity, according to the weather forecasters.
The developing Cyclone Arnab and the associated low-pressure system over the Arabian Sea are expected to influence wind patterns, with the circulation likely to shift towards the Bay of Bengal, off the north Tamil Nadu coast, by Monday. While easterly winds are expected along the northern flank of the circulation, from Cuddalore to Chennai, southern districts are likely to experience westerly winds.
Meanwhile, several central interior and coastal districts are likely to get heavy rainfall. Kallakurichi, Dharmapuri, Salem, Tiruppur, Coimbatore, the Nilgiris, Erode, Namakkal, Dindigul, Karur, Tiruchy, Madurai, Pudukkottai and Sivagangai are among the districts likely to receive heavy rain.
The Delta region and adjoining districts, including Thanjavur, Nagapattinam, Mayiladuthurai, Ariyalur, Perambalur, Cuddalore, Puducherry, Villupuram and Tiruvannamalai, are also likely to experience heavy rainfall due to wind convergence.
In southern Tamil Nadu, Kanyakumari, Tirunelveli, Thoothukudi, Theni and Tenkasi could receive additional rainfall as westerly winds strengthen over the region.
The Kodaikanal and Coonoor hill belts also warrant attention, as easterly winds are likely to be trapped against the hills, potentially triggering heavy rainfall.
