CHENNAI: A history-sheeter was hacked to death by a gang in broad daylight in Adyar on Tuesday while returning from a police station after signing the register as required under his bail conditions. His father, who was travelling with him in an autorickshaw, witnessed the attack.

The deceased, V. Maithreyan of Mylapore, was returning to a relative’s house in Thiruvanmiyur after appearing at the Mylapore police station.

Passersby alerted the Adyar police, who rushed to the spot. Maithreyan was taken to a private hospital in Taramani, where he was declared dead. His body was later shifted to Government Royapettah Hospital for a postmortem examination.

Maithreyan was a Category C history-sheeter with several cases pending against him. He had been released on conditional bail last week in a case and was required to sign the register at the Mylapore police station every day.

The gang of attackers reportedly uploaded a video of the attack on social media. Police said the video was removed after they intervened.
