Chennai: 27 Candidates in Fray for Madurantakam By-Poll
Of the 27 candidates now in the fray, 10 are candidates of recognised and unrecognised political parties, while 17 are Independents.
Chennai: As many as 27 candidates are in the fray for the Madurantakam (SC) Assembly by-poll in Chengalpet district after the deadline for withdrawal of nominations ended on Saturday.
A total of 48 candidates had filed nominations for the by-poll. During scrutiny, 20 nominations were rejected, leaving 28 candidates with valid nominations.
The Election Commission had fixed 3 pm on Saturday as the deadline for withdrawing nominations. One Independent candidate withdrew from the contest, while none of the other candidates opted to withdraw.
Of the 27 candidates now in the fray, 10 are candidates of recognised and unrecognised political parties, while 17 are Independents.
The candidates of the five recognised political parties are Maragatham Kumaravel (Tamilaga Vetri Kazhagam), Parandhaman (DMK), Kanitha Sampath (AIADMK), Sugandhi (CPI-M) and Janakiraman (Naam Tamilar Katchi).
Five other candidates belong to unrecognised political parties — All India Anna Dravida Makkal Seyal Katchi, Oozhal Ozhippu Seyalakka Katchi, Indian Republican Party, Jebamani Janata and National People’s Shakti Party.
With the withdrawal process over, campaigning has begun in the constituency and will continue until the evening of October 4.
Polling for the Madurantakam constituency is scheduled for October 6, while counting of votes will be held on October 9.
