KARUR: An audio clip of woman police constable Parvathi, attached to the Thennilai police station, in Karur district, speaking disrespectfully and threatening a man over phone went viral on social media on Monday.
Official sources said Subramani from Kattupalayam was contacted over phone by the woman police constable Parvathi in connection with an alleged chain-snatching case in 2020.
It is learnt that Subramani was intimated over telephone to present himself before the court, as the trial was slated for Tuesday.
During the incident, Subramani stated that 7.5 sovereigns of gold jewellery were stolen, but the police returned only 5 sovereigns. However, Subramani informed the constable over phone that he cannot appear in court tomorrow because he has to go to the hospital due to a health issue.
In response, the constable allegedly addressed him in the singular, used abusive language and threatened him by saying she would put him behind bars.
It is essential for police personnel interacting with the general public to act in accordance with the law and maintain a dignified approach. While there are proper, established procedures to inform citizens about the necessity of appearing in court and to ensure compliance with legal processes, the audio recording shows the policewoman allegedly speaking disrespectfully to the man, sources said.
Therefore, the higher authorities must verify the authenticity of the audio clip circulating on social media and initiate proper investigation, they said.
