Advisory For People Not To Stand In Open, Under Tree Or Near Windows
People were asked not to stand in an open place or under a tree or near the window during lightning and not to operate electrical appliances with moist hands.
Chennai:The state electricity department has issued safety guidelines for the public during the monsoon season, including not to go close to electric posts or touch snapped wires lying on the ground, streets or stagnant water.
People were asked not to stand in an open place or under a tree or near the window during lightning and not to operate electrical appliances with moist hands. The department has asked people to switch off electrical appliances and wired phones during lightning and thunder and stay away from waterlogged areas near pillar boxes and electrical switch boards.
In a press note here, the department requested the people to inform the electricity board if they found any snapped electricity conductor. They should also alert the neighbours and not go near them. People should ensure that there is easy access to switch off the supply source quickly and they should switch off the mains in case of a short circuit.
The department asked the people to seek shelter when there is lightning and thunder, asking them to move to a large building or to metal-topped vehicles such as cars or buses. If there is no shelter, people should find a low spot away from trees, power lines, poles and metal fences.
Windows located near plug points during the showers must be closed and people should not stand near open windows or doors during thunder or lightning. Other instructions included installing switches and plug sockets at an inaccessible height and away from children.
It asked people not to instal switches inside bathrooms and other wet places and not to secure livestock to electric poles. People must avoid going near transformers, pillar boxes, electrical poles, stay wires and fencing.
