2,37,88,375 Women Get Loans Through SHGs

Over 2.37 crore women benefit from boosted financial support; ₹37,000 crore loan target set for 2025–26

Chennai: In the last four years of DMK rule, 2,37,88,375 women belonging to 18,29,875 Self-Help Groups (SHGs) have been extended loan facilities to the tune of Rs 1,12,998.03 crore, which is a record in the history of the SHG movement launched in 1989 by the then DMK government led by M Karunanidhi.

After the present government of M K Stalin took over the reins of the State four years ago, the SHG movement received a fillip due to the consistent financial support in terms of loans.

The Tamil Nadu Women Development Corporation, under which the SHGs of the State function, said in a press release on Wednesday that in the year 2024-25, though a target of Rs 35,000 crore was fixed for loans, 4,84,659 SHGs received loans to the tune of Rs 35,189.87 crore.

For 2025-26, disbursal of loans to the tune of Rs 37,000 crore to the SHGs had been envisaged in the Budget and till May 7, the loan disbursal had been Rs 698.87 crore benefitting 7,917 SHGs, the release said.
