Sreelekha’s Resignation a Drama For Personal Gains: K Muraleedharan
Muraleedharan said he was terming it a drama as the resignation, as per the rules, should have be given to the municipal corporation's secretary
Thiruvananthapuram: Keralam Health and Devaswom Minister K Muraleedharan on Sunday termed as a "drama" the resignation offered by retired DGP and Sasthamangalam councillor R Sreelekha.
Muraleedharan said he was terming it a drama as the resignation, as per the rules, should have be given to the municipal corporation's secretary.
"It is not something that she as a councillor is unaware of. She was an IPS officer. The first woman DGP. A person like that is not aware of the rules? This was an attempt to get some positions within the party," he claimed.
The minister said that such actions amounted to "betraying" the people who voted for her.
"The Congress only sees it as a drama enacted for some personal gains," he contended.
His remarks came amidst reports that Sreelekha has withdrawn her resignation.
He also said that the UDF was willing to bring a no-confidence motion in the Thiruvananthapuram Corporation if the LDF was willing to support it.
He claimed that there are many within the BJP, which rules the corporation, who are not happy with the way things are going on in the local body.
"So, there is a possibility that the motion will be passed if the LDF supports it. We cannot do it on our own as we do not have the numbers," he told reporters.
The BJP is currently in power in the Corporation with the support of an Independent councillor. Another BJP councillor, R Sugathan, is currently in jail after being booked under the Kerala Anti-Social Activities (Prevention) Act.
Sreelekha, who won the Sasthamangalam ward on a BJP ticket, tendered her resignation on September 30.
The resignation came to light after a message purportedly posted by Sreelekha in a WhatsApp group of residents of her ward said she had submitted her resignation to the Mayor and would hand over a copy to the District Collector on October 5.
The BJP came to power in the Thiruvananthapuram Corporation for the first time, securing the support of 51 councillors, including an Independent, in the 101-member civic body.
Sreelekha contested the Assembly election from Vattiyoorkavu in April but lost to Congress leader K Muraleedharan.
