THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: In a significant development, actor Shwetha Menon and Kukku Parameswaran were elected as president and general secretary, respectively, of the Association of Malayalam Movie Artists (AMMA). This is the first time in the organisation's history that women will head the two top posts.

Shwetha secured victory in a high-stakes contest with actor turned BJP leader Devan while Kukku defeated veteran actor Raveendran. Unni Shivapal was elected as treasurer.

Jayan Cherthala and Lakshmi Prya are the new vice presidents of the organisation, while Ansiba Hassan has been elected as the joint secretary.

After her election, Shwetha Menon told media persons that her main task was to unify the organisation. "We need the support and blessings of veteran actors Mohanlal, Mammootty and Suresh Gopi. They are our patrons and we look forward to their full support in our activities. Our team will sit and deliberate on the issues that require immediate attention," she said.

Her rival Devan also congratulated Shwetha Menon. "It is a well-deserved victory for Swetha. I hope the new team will work for the good of the artistes fraternity in the Malayalam film industry. My support will be there for all the good initiatives," he told reporters.

Earlier, superstar Mohanlal cast his vote and expressed the hope that the new team will work effectively for the fraternity.

Actor Injured In Road Mishap

Actor Biju Kuttan, who was on his way from Coimbatore to Kochi to cast his vote in AMMA elections, sustained injuries in an accident. The mishap took place when the vehicle in which he was travelling, crashed into a container truck at Vadakkumuri in Kannadi in Palakkad district on Friday morning.

Biju Kuttan had a minor injury to his hnd while his driver was admitted to a private hospital in Palakkad in a critical condition.

The car collided with the container truck parked by the roadside after the driver allegedly fell asleep.
