Kochi: Actor Salim Kumar, who died here while undergoing treatment for pneumonia, was a celebrated artiste whose comedy dialogues transcended cinema screens to become an integral part of everyday conversations among Malayalees, helping audience laugh through life's anxieties, frustrations and awkward moments. For over two decades, his punchlines, expressions and quirky characters found a place not only in theatres but also in homes, workplaces, college campuses and tea shops across the state.

Long before memes and social media popularised film dialogues as cultural currency, Salim Kumar's lines had already entered common parlance.

Whether it was a moment of confusion, disappointment, self-mockery or comic relief, Malayalis often found a Salim Kumar dialogue that perfectly captured the situation.

Many of his most memorable lines continue to be quoted years after the films were released, a testament to the actor's rare ability to connect with ordinary people and everyday life.

The National Award-winning actor, who was 56, rose from Kerala's mimicry circuit to become one of the most recognisable faces in Malayalam cinema.

At the peak of his career in the early 2000s, he delivered a string of memorable performances in blockbuster comedies including "Thenkasipattanam", "Meesa Madhavan", "Kalyanaraman", "Thilakkam", "Pulival Kalyanam", "CID Moosa", "Pandippada", "Chathikkatha Chanthu" and "Hello".

Characters such as Advocate Mukundan Unni, Pyari, Omanakuttan, Aashan, Manavalan and Dance Master Vikram became household names, while the scenes featuring them acquired a cult following among audiences.

What distinguished Kumar from many of his contemporaries was the remarkable afterlife of his performances.

His dialogues survived far beyond their original cinematic context and became woven into Kerala's popular culture.

In the social media era, they found a new audience through memes, troll videos and reaction clips, ensuring that his humour remained relevant across generations.

Born in North Paravur in Ernakulam district, Salim Kumar began his artistic journey as a mimicry artist before entering films in the mid-1990s.

After years of playing minor roles, he emerged as one of Malayalam cinema's most sought-after comedians, known for his impeccable timing, expressive body language and unique style of dialogue delivery.

He later proved his versatility through acclaimed character roles, most notably in "Achanurangatha Veedu" and "Adaminte Makan Abu", the latter earning him the National Film Award for Best Actor and the Kerala State Film Award.

Actor, mimicry artiste, writer and filmmaker, Salim Kumar remained one of the few performers who could make audiences laugh uncontrollably in one film and move them deeply in another.

Yet for countless Malayalis, his most enduring legacy may be the countless phrases, expressions and comic moments that became inseparable from everyday life in Kerala.

Outside cinema, Salim Kumar was also known for his longstanding association with the Congress and was regarded as a supporter of the grand-old party.

A close associate of Chief Minister V D Satheesan, he remained vocal about his political convictions despite criticism from political opponents and actively campaigned for the Congress-led UDF and Satheesan during the April 9 Assembly polls.
