Thiruvananthapuram: Kerala BJP chief Rajeev Chandrasekhar on Tuesday launched a sharp attack on Karnataka Deputy Chief Minister DK Shivakumar over his remarks against people from Kerala in connection with the Kogilu encroachment eviction row.

Responding to criticism from Kerala Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan on the eviction drive, Shivakumar had said, “We don’t want any Keralites. Let the CM do his job, we will do ours.”

Reacting strongly, Chandrasekhar accused the Congress of practising divisive politics. He alleged that the party seeks to divide people on the basis of caste, geography, religion, and language.

“This Congress ‘leader’ is exactly what Rahul Gandhi ordered. For a party that talks of Bharat Jodo and the Constitution, its politics is about dividing people using caste, geography, religion and language,” Chandrasekhar wrote on X.

He further remarked, “By DK Shivakumar’s shameless political standards, should Malayalees and Indians say we don’t want Italians and half-Italians interfering in Kerala and India?”

Earlier, DK Shivakumar accused Kerala CM Pinarayi Vijayan of politicising the Kogilu encroachment evictions due to fears of defeat in the upcoming Kerala Assembly elections.

After inspecting the cleared government land at Kogilu, Shivakumar said the land had been allotted for solid waste management nine years ago and that sheds were erected illegally in recent times. He said notices were issued to occupants before the eviction and maintained that the area was unfit for habitation.

Karnataka Chief Minister Siddaramaiah said that 164 illegal sheds were demolished after due notice and that genuine evictees would be rehabilitated at Byappanahalli following verification.
