Noted Historian MGS Narayanan Passes Away

THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: Noted historian and former chairman of Indian Council for Historical Research IICHR) M G S Narayanan passed away in Kozhikode on Saturday. He was 93.

Narayanan, popularly known as MGS, charted his own course in historical research. He was outspoken about his views on history, politics and society, which often led to criticism and controversy.

The eminent historian was active in the Indian History Congress since 1976 and led multiple historical research projects in collaboration with the ICHR. He was also a visiting professor at several universities in India and abroad.

He had mentored over a thousand students and supervised many postgraduate research projects.

An author of over 200 books and articles, M G S Narayanan was widely admired for his fearless approach to history and contemporary politics. Some of his significant works include "Perumals of Kerala, "Calicut: The City of Truth Revisited," "Cultural Symbiosis in Kerala," and Navothanathinte Raashtreeya Manangal."

The mortal remains of MGS Narayanan were cremated with full state honours. MGS leaves behind his wife, Premalatha, and his children, Jayakumar (an Indian Air Force Officer) and Vinaya (a dancer).
