Thiruvananthapuram: Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Thursday congratulated newly elected Thiruvananthapuram Corporation Mayor VV Rajesh and Deputy Mayor GS Asha Nath following the BJP’s historic victory in the local body elections.

In a letter shared by VV Rajesh on social media, the Prime Minister described the BJP’s victory as an end to the “fixed match” between the CPI(M)-led Left Democratic Front (LDF) and the Congress-led United Democratic Front (UDF). He said the party’s vision of a “Viksit Thiruvananthapuram” resonated with voters across the city.

“In the midst of the festive season and as we begin the year 2026, history was made in the great city of Thiruvananthapuram when you took oath as the Mayor of the city and GS Asha Nath Ji took oath as the Deputy Mayor,” Modi wrote, congratulating the newly elected leadership, councillors and party workers for their historic performance.

The Prime Minister recalled his visits to Thiruvananthapuram and described it as a city of immense cultural and spiritual significance, blessed by Sree Padmanabhaswamy and known for nurturing thought leaders, artists, reformers and saints. He said the city’s support for the BJP was humbling and reflected people’s faith in the Centre’s governance and urban development efforts.

Taking aim at the LDF and UDF, PM Modi alleged that both fronts had perpetuated a culture of corruption and violence in Kerala’s politics. He praised BJP workers for standing firm despite adversity and for fearlessly raising people’s issues during the campaign.

“The success of our Party in the capital of Kerala is epoch-making and a milestone written in golden letters,” the Prime Minister said, adding that BJP-NDA was emerging as a people’s alternative rooted in nationalism without exclusion, development without corruption and governance without appeasement.

He further said that the result signalled a desire for change among Kerala’s people, particularly youngsters and women, and suggested that the dominance of the LDF and UDF was nearing its end.

BJP state secretary and Kodunganoor ward councillor VV Rajesh was elected Mayor of Thiruvananthapuram Corporation on December 26, marking the BJP’s first mayoral win in the city. He secured 51 votes with the support of 50 BJP councillors and one independent councillor. UDF candidate KS Sabarinathan received 17 votes, while LDF’s RP Shivaji secured 29.

GS Asha Nath was elected Deputy Mayor on the same day, completing the BJP’s breakthrough in Kerala’s urban political landscape.
