Members of various Christian denominations stage a protest rally outside Kerala Raj Bhavan in Thiruvananthapuram on Wednesday to protest against the arrest of two nuns in Chhattisgarh.

Thiruvananthapuram: Massive protests erupted across Kerala on Wednesday against the arrest of two nuns in Chhattisgarh on charges of conversion and human trafficking.

Hundreds of people from various Christian denominations, including bishops, priests, nuns, and believers, participated in rallies , marches and meetings held across different districts.

A large march to the Raj Bhavan was led by Syro Malankara Catholic Church Archbishop Mar Baselios Cleemis.

Speakers at the protest meet said hundreds of nuns are selflessly serving the poor and needy in every nook and corner of the country. This meeting aims to show solidarity with the two nuns. These nuns dedicate themselves to helping people in Kerala and other parts of India.

"They are a blessing to secular India, touching the lives of millions, especially in rural areas, by providing education and health care and helping integrate them into mainstream society. Their service transcends denominations and the entire community. No jail can stop such commitment to humanity. Stay strong God is with you. We are all with you," said the Archbishop.

The Church leaders said it was unfortunate that before the arrest, the nuns faced a mob trial where they were humiliated. More than denial of bail, what has shocked them is seeing people celebrate the denial of bail outside the court premises. Is this what secularism looks like? Is this the culture of the country ?

The Christian community has been part of this country for 2000 years, living peacefully with crores of Hindu brothers and sisters who protect and respect them. This reflects the tradition of the nation, where people of all faiths are honoured, they said.

"Questions are being raised about the ongoing protests in Kerala. With its impressive 100 per cent literacy rate, not only Christians but people of various religions are uniting to speak out against this injustice. This issue goes beyond any individual or ruling party - it is a challenge to the secular foundation of the country's constitution," said Cleemis.

The Christian community is appealing to the rulers for justice. The Constitution guarantees everyone the right to follow a religion and express their faith. The two arrested nuns are not foreigners but citizens of this country. So, who else can we turn to for addressing our pain and concerns if not the rulers? the Church leaders asked.

The BJP state president has publicly stated that the allegations against the nuns are false. If that's the case, they should explain why they remain in jail. Why can't they be released? The government must take action against those responsible for attacking the nuns.

The Church leaders said those who are undertaking Christian outreach programmes should "walk the talk". "If we have been converting people for the past 2000 years, why hasn't the Christian population increased exponentially? It has remained at just 2.5 per cent," the Archbishop pointed out.

The Church leaders said many misleading statements are being spread to create hatred against minorities, including Christians. The government should demonstrate the willpower to step in and put an end to such campaigns.

"Nobody should think that these actions will deter Christians from working in society. We will continue to serve the poor, the needy, the helpless, and the suffering. Even the last Christina will remain dedicated to helping the poor," said Cleemis.
