Kerala's AI Traffic Camera Network Goes Offline Over Unpaid Dues
With the internet connection cut off, footage from the AI cameras is no longer transmitted to control rooms, preventing authorities from detecting fresh traffic violations and issuing fines based on camera evidence
THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: Kerala's AI-based traffic enforcement system has come to a standstill after internet services to the state's network of AI cameras were suspended over unpaid dues.
The disruption occurred after internet service provider Jio disconnected connectivity to the project, which is managed by Keltron. The agency was unable to clear the outstanding payments as it is awaiting more than Rs 90 crore in pending dues from the state government.
With the internet connection cut off, footage from the AI cameras is no longer transmitted to control rooms, preventing authorities from detecting fresh traffic violations and issuing fines based on camera evidence.
Kerala rolled out the AI camera network in April 2023 as part of the Motor Vehicles Department's automated traffic enforcement system to monitor road rule violations across the state.
