Kannur: As part of the annual Onam celebrations, the Kerala State Road Transport Corporation (KSRTC) Budget Tourism organized a one-day trip from Kannur to the flower fields of Gundlupet in Karnataka, popularly known as the ‘Flower Pot of India’. The initiative aimed to provide people with a budget-friendly option to enjoy the vast, colorful fields.

The trip was led by Tourism Cell Kannur District Coordinator Tanseer K R, Unit in-charge Rajeesh K, and guide Swapna P P. Regular travelers from the Kannur unit also joined the first trip.

Tourist Angha Rajan described her pleasant experience, saying: “As we all know, traveling in KSRTC means traveling in bus only. Gundlupet is full of scenic beauty and nature. The breakfast, lunch, and dinner were nice, and the staff was very friendly, making us feel welcome.”

Another tourist, Ayisha Beevi, admitted she was initially hesitant due to stereotypes about KSRTC journeys being uncomfortable. “At first I was not interested at all… but this journey was amazing. The staff were friendly, the organizing and punctuality were perfect. The food was very good, and we didn’t even have to wait in queues,” she said.

The package, arranged under special instructions from District Transport Officer V Manoj Kumar, started at 5 a.m. from Kannur and returned by midnight.

This year, Onam is being celebrated from August 26 to September 5. The festival, observed in the month of Chingam, marks the beginning of the Malayalam calendar and is a harvest celebration. Families gather, exchange gifts, and wear traditional kasavu saris and mundus to honor the homecoming of King Mahabali.
